How to monitor your bankroll -bankroll experiment

glossforumadmin 242 posts

So, after writing about Bankroll Management, I had a few people asking me about it.  So I figured I would explain the easy way and just do an online experiment in the fashion that Chris "Jesus" Fergusen did.  Couple of differences though, I am not (and do not consider myself to be anywhere near) Chris, and I didn't start with freerolls like he did.  My desire is to show that the average guy/gal can win and make money at poker while showing how to keep notations.  Online players have a cashier they can quickly look at, but it does not give you long term information on where you made your money.  Try to keep a notepad and track your wins and losses, it's smart and a good habit.

Since I have done it, I know building your bankroll can be done, but crazy things happen in poker.  Might take a few times...hope not though.  I did start with 5 bux borrowed from someone since I cant find my wallet.  I do have the money...just no way to deposit...heh.  Each session represents the time I was at one table.  My plan is pretty well layed out in the Bankroll Management blog, but to recap.  I start each session with a set amount.  If I am ahead, I do not bring my entire roll to the table.  When possible (sometimes ya gotta put it all in), if I get down to half my starting stack, I leave the table, unless I have a good read on the table.  If I get up half my starting stack I leave the table unless I double my stack, then I stay but do not risk the additional half that I earned to ensure that I leave the table ahead.  Make sense?  To make it a quick read...when bankroll goes up, it gets a smile.  When it goes down, it gets a weepy face.
Addendum:  Because the small stakes ring games were so much donkey play and many times based in luck, I left those and started playing SnGs.  Sit and Go's are more manageable for some because everyone starts with the same stack and if there is an idiot at the table, once you take his/her chips they cant rebuy and come back to get lucky on ya.  But If you are not good at short handed play, placing third more than placing higher can dwindle a bankroll.
So the first session looks like this:

The CardPlayer.com free Poker Analyst is a great tool for tracking live, online and home games.

Lately I have been using my official online poker ranking to track mulitable play and the free sharkscope.

The online ranking helps me to check ROI. It only tracks MTT, but I have found it to be 100% accurate when cross refrenced against 3 years of my records.  Only problem is it only tracks the major sites.

Sharkscope, of course only tracks SNG play, the numbers are wierd at times but tracks almost every platform out there.

I am only looking for an ROI basline.  By focusing on that number which takes a huge hit if I step up to high a level or play poorly, I find it easier to get back into proper bankroll management and bankroll panic/tilt.
